December at My Door

It is raining outside my door.

A downpour of pellets
pierce and poke
  coppery vines,
 like an old, itchy cloak!

 Diagonally, the droplets dive
onto thirsty fields,
and 'expectant' groves,

as boughs bearing
gifts of citrus and olives
drink, rest, and grow,
before the upcoming
first fall of snow.

In seconds,
sculpted black balconies
are squeaky clean;
their engraved, tangled vines
buffed to a sheen.

Geraniums, splattered and splashed,
petals of red, pushed, shoved and lashed,
struggle against the rain's beating hand,
prevailing over its force, in the end.

 This morning,
December rain
knocked on my door,
and tapping the doorbell,
it begged and implored
for my undivided attention.
So, I listened: all morning,
and into the eve,
until, tired and drained,
the rain took its leave.

Thanks for visiting!
 Happy December!

You make a rainy day sound like a paradise.
What is the average temperature there this time of year?

  8. Lovely quote, Lucy!

The average temperature for the month of December is between a high of 15°C - 17°C, and a low of 9°C. It can get a little blustery, which adds to the drama!

  10. We are fortunate that your eyes and ears are so attuned to the gifts of nature that many of us take for granted. You have the soul of an artist, Poppy, and the gift to be able to pen what you see in such natural poetry that seems to spring from you as easily as I make out a grocery list.

Thank you for being our eyes and ears to the beauty that you see simply by standing at your window.

  15. I'm enjoying the change of seasons through your lens and poetry, Poppy! I love having a little peek into where you live. It is so beautiful even in rain. It must be something to be surrounded by all that natural beauty, and the way you capture it, it's clear that you never take it for granted. Are those citrus and olive trees yours? Happy December to you, Poppy!

  17. Lovely poetry to go along with your rainy day. We normally have rain in the Pacific NW this time of year, but it has stayed unusually dry so far. Thanks for sharing your pretty images!

  18. A beautiful view you have. Today it is getting up to 60 and on a couple of days down to the 20s with snow.

  19. I could easily spend the whole day listening and watching the rain, even better lying down under a tin roof with my eyes closed just savouring that tinkling sound. So relaxing, so soothing. But in your case, you have that beautiful view to feast your eyes with.

Have a good week my friend.

    1. Hi Ruth,

Yes, here in the village we're higher up than in the city, and we do get two or three snowfalls in the winter. The last time it snowed in the city, if I remember correctly, was in February 2008!
