Are You a 'New Domestic'?

Do you take pride in your cleaning, dusting, sweeping and mopping?

Have you developed a 'green thumb', and if so,
does it, along with the other nine, fine digits
sometimes hide under hot, adorable oven mitts

when you present your perfect, home-baked goodness
to the gals in your knitting circles?

And when you aren't creating that cozy, casual sweater for hubby,
are you by any chance canning those sweet, juicy strawberries you picked?

You, a multi-tasker mommy, are prepared.
Partnering the jelly with peanut butter on soft, white bread,

- (your latest loaf is Martha worthy) - and will save you at snack time.
For, you, are a teacher, too, (little recesses are big perks!):
quiet time and coffee - a strong, black brew is always due.

But easy on the caffeine, your custom-made alarm clock
crows at 5:30 am - sharp!

Cock-a-doodle-doo! No snooze button for you!
Time to visit the other chatty chicks you hang out with,
not to mention the bloggers you 'meet' for breakfast.
Yes, you even make time to surf!

 Final report:
If you answered 'yes', to most of the above duties,
then you, my friend, are a 'New Domestic':
a happy homemaker who chooses to stay at home,
for it is her haven, a place where she creates!

You're trendy, (and tired),
but, the most popular
 girl in the land!
Read all about it!
You're history in the making -
(that is, when you're not cleaning,
 homeschooling and baking!).

Thanks for visiting!

  5. This a very cute post, Poppy! My daughter is homeschooling, too! She says that making her own shampoo and baking can all be math for her kids! Love it!

  6. You have taken the pulse of women today, Poppy! And in such an adorable bedside manner! I stand amazed at what young mothers accomplish today. There is such talent out there. And they make it seem so easy, although I know it probably isn't. I admire them greatly.

Do I take pride in all of the above you wrote about? Yes, when I do it, although I claim retirement in more than one area of my life. I can't say that I love doing domestic duties, but I do love "having" done them--when I do them, that is.

I love this post. I hope it helps busy mothers everywhere it's read take heart. You've helped point out that they are not alone.

  7. This is so me! I entered a contest to win this book, actually. I will definitely try to read it even if I don't win a copy. I am so happy to be domestic and to have committed my life to my home and family and homey pursuits. :) I also used to be a teacher and did a lot of these things then too, so I guess this is totally me. :)

  8. I'm exhausted just reading about these women. I can't claim to be in the category, being a post career, living solo, sometimes knitting, currently wielding a paint brush (on a door, not canvas), haphazard gardener who owns a book of canning recipes but hasn't tried using it. Yet. ;)

    Have a fabulous week!

  9. I don´t know if I can manage to do ALL those things really well, but certainly I´m trying... and enjoying the process! If that counts, then I´m part of the club too... Thanks for the post, I loved it!
    Warmest hugs,
    K.

  10. Its funny...that lady's blog was one of the first I read last year when I discovered BLOG LAND.

Your post is cute as can be. Cute as a button. Neat as a pin. ( where in the world did some of those sayings come from? Dear Domestic Goddess you could find out and do a post about it :)

  11. I admit I've always been that way. I'm not a great cook. Guess because once my girls were grown, I didn't have as much of a reason. And who wants to cook for one? But yes, I'm in that group. People ask what you do, and when you say "homemaker" they don't take you seriously. You feel unworthy. But it's a wonderful job, and someone has to do it. I would LOVE that apron up there!

  13. Hello Poppy

I would say I am at heart, I do not always master all to perfection but love the process

I love the title new domestic...it is an amazing privilege.

  16. Poppy, this was a fun post! It is funny because while I do not have children, I do everything else in addition to my career as an Army officer. The thing is that this is how I get in touch with my feminine side, and I love it!

  18. This is such a cute post, Poppy! Yep, I've been all those things, am still doing most; and as a Nana to 6 sweeties, I'm doing it all over again but in a different way. And you know what? I still love it!

  20. Great post, Poppy, and interesting article. I'm so glad young women are "coming back home" to the domestic arts. I guess at my age I'm an "old domestic," or at least a wannabe! (As you know, I'm eager for retirement so that I have more time to enjoy domesticity.) Blessings! Bess

  22. Cute and fun post! I've always been domestic, even when I was young and a newlywed. Except that I don't knit or can or get up at the crack of dawn. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I answered yes to all except the knitting part (can't knit to save my life)! I would love to stay at home one day but for now, i'll just have to content with being a part time new domestic.

  24. The older I get, the more domestic I get. I love this post. :)

  25. lol YES! And I also have the book, although I haven't had the time to actually start reading it...

  26. Definitely! Thanks dear friend, you are so resourceful. One day when I'm not too flat-out I might just find time to relax.

    Happy weekend.

  27. Yes, I am, and I'm happy to be one too. It's all I've ever wanted to be really. I could have had a career but I chose to stay at home and raise my babies. I've lived my dream and if I could, I would do it all over again too. Great post, Poppy!

    Blessings,

  28. Cute post! I've read her blog for quite some time. If you really want to read about the new domesticity movement then read Shannon Hayes's book Radical Homemakers: Reclaiming Domesticity - it's all very interesting.

    1. I am fifty-one years old and you have described me and my life tor the past twenty-eight years. Do I qualify as a "New Domestic"?

    2. Hi there!

Hmm. This is a bit tricky. If you have ENJOYED your domesticity, then, I guess, yes! 'New Domestics' feel privileged to stay at home!:))

  30. Thank you for answering. Even in my generation, staying at home was a choice -and not a popular one! Yes, I enjoyed (most) of it! My three children were home educated through twelfth grade here in the U.S. Two have completed undergrad degrees, and the third has one semester left.

My husband and I now have an empty nest, but I still choose not to work for pay but, rather, keep the nest feathered, and be available to volunteer and help others.

I enjoy my life and am grateful that my husband is fine with me not bringing income into the
    marriage.

I was just teasing you with my question, though. I hope that I am aging gracefully. Everyone who knows me would agree that I am domestic, but "new"? Ahem. No.

I have enjoyed this blog entry, though, and hope it encourages other sahms.

  34. You just got featured at The Creative Home and Garden Hop - head on over to http://mumtopia.blogspot.com/2013/08/the-creative-home-and-garden-hop-3.html
and pick up your "I got featured" button. I was interested to read about the New Domestic so thanks for opening the debate with this sweetly illustrated post. I'm glad women have a choice now as to whether they want to embrace this role or not. Coming from a one-income family, I feel lucky to be at home, but I know it's not for everyone.

  35. I had to work as a RN for a long time to become this and then retire but I do these things now. Maybe not well but with pleasure. Splendid post.

  37. I enjoyed this post and could relate to it :) but after reading the linked newspaper article, I am probably an old fashioned "domestic" since I am not a feminist... I'd like to think of myself as romantically feminine... Thanks for sharing this on the Art of Home-Making Mondays! :)

  38. When our boys were little, I stayed home - cooked, cleaned and loved every moment of it. When all the boys were in school I went back part time. The older they got the more I worked. I retired last year and planted a garden this year and learned how to can things. I am having a ball now and my house looks a lot better.

  39. Yes indeedy. Although I was a stay at home mom. I am an empty nester working woman! This was a great post! It's me even though I do have to work now. Thanks for sharing!

  40. Yes yes yes! I've always loved everything about home. Today I'm making a roast for my neighbors who just had a baby and doing laundry. I'm in my happy place. :)
