Welcome to my kitchen!
I love cooking and baking, especially, with friends and family.
Besides a hot oven that promises cozy and comforting delights,
creating and sharing is what really warms up the house, isn't it?
Today, for my very first food post,
I am baking a delicious Bacon Onion Tart,
which I've been making for close to eight years now!
I even make my own pastry!
Reluctant to do so for years,
fearing tough, rubbery results,
this recipe is foolproof, flaky and puffy!
(All good things with regards to pies,
people... not so much!)
So, put the coffee on,
while we read through the recipe:
To make the pastry:
½
cup plus 1 tbsp butter
1 ¾ cup all purpose flour
1 egg
4 tbsp half and half
I tsp salt
For the filling:
4 medium onions (I use large)
4 bacon slices, diced (I use double)
½
cup whipping cream (be generous)
2 eggs
½ cup grated cheese (my addition)
1 tsp salt and pepper
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 400°F /250°C.
Lightly grease an 11 inch quiche pan; set aside.
Using a pastry blender or fork, work butter into flour.
Stir in the egg, half and half and salt to make a dough.
Let stand in a cool place for a few minutes.
Thinly slice the onions.
Fry bacon in a small skillet
over medium heat until golden brown.
Add onion rings; saute 2 to 3 minutes.
Drain off excess fat.
In medium bowl, beat together
whipping cream, eggs, salt and pepper.
On a lightly floured surface, roll out pastry.
Line greased pan with pastry.
Prick pastry surface with a fork.
(See second photo from top)
Spread cooked bacon and onions over pastry.
Pour in cream mixture and sprinkle with grated cheese.
Cover with foil and bake 20 minutes. Remove foil and
bake 10 to 15 minutes longer, or until set.
Cut into wedges or squares and serve warm.
When cooking for large numbers,
double the quantities given.
Bake on a large baking sheet
or jelly roll pan.
Puff pastry or pizza dough
can be substituted for pastry,
but this one is so quick and easy;
I never resort to store bought!
Hope you give it a go!
This savoury tart is so
appetizing that, once tasted,
it tempts your taste buds for seconds!
(Too irresistible to ignore,
you have a little more).
Go ahead - who's keeping score?!
Thanks for baking with me!
Meet me in my kitchen next week,
for another pie, this one, sweet and exotic!

That looks so good! As soon as I read the word 'bacon' I knew it would be something tasty. I've never gotten the hang of making pie crust so I'll have to give your recipe a try.
ReplyDeleteHi JoAnne,
ReplyDeletePlease do so, you'll be amazed at how easy it really is, which is comforting, which is tempting...Oh it's a vicious and voracious circle, isn't it?!!

Poppy
I not only read through it, I printed it out! Got to try this! Is there anything that smells better than bacon and onions cooking? Poppy, you did a beautiful first food post! And I like making my own crust too. A little mess but what a difference in taste. A question: How much pre-baking work could I do on this, do you think? How does it taste heated back up the second day--if there were any leftovers? And how would it taste for breakfast? Sounds like it would be good then. I'll let you know ow it turns out when I try this.
ReplyDeleteNext that pie you're going to make us! You know that R.H. is waiting for a piece of his favorite!
Dewena
Hi Dewena,
DeleteNO! There is definitely nothing better than bacon and onions caramelizing in a hot pan, and the smell of this flavourful fusion floating throughout the house!
To answer a few of your questions...This tart reheats beautifully, in fact, it's even tastier the next day, as all the textures of the tasty ingredients have melted into one another, simply mouthwatering! You know you and I love our breakfast for dinner, and vice versa...well, this is the perfect dish for the first meal of the day! I have it with my usual hazelnut coffee, while I sit down to visit my blog buddies!
I know you'll be very happy with this tart, my friend. Can you believe that our husbands are once again, TOO similar to believe, with that OTHER pie, being their favourite?!! It's scary!!
xoxo
Poppy
Looks good, Poppy.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kim! Hope to link up to WOW tomorrow morning! It's 1 am here, and I always miss it by a few hours with the time change!

I'm imagining that heavenly aroma! Today was our first really cold day, and I would have loved to have had that tart baking for tonight's dinner. Good thing there are many more cold nights ahead to enjoy this savory treat! I'm pinning in for one of those nights. Great first food post, Poppy!

Poppy
I love quiche style tarts - it is the only way I enjoy eggs. I'll put your fool proof pie crust to the test :-) I have never got the hang of it, probably because my mom always bakes my husband an apple pie. Great first recipe to post!
ReplyDeleteHi Stacy,
DeleteWow, you don't like eggs! Even though the pie does contain 3 eggs, they go unnoticed as the bacon and onion aroma is so lovely. Of course they are there to help with the fluffiness of the filling and the pastry! Awaiting your opinion! :-)

Poppy
Poppy, this looks absolutely delicious / will try it ! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Debra,
DeleteI have visited you enough times to know that you are one talented cook! Hope you like my bacon onion tart; let me know!
xo
Poppy
Poppy, that looks delicious!! I am always scared of making pie dough and usually buy a premix to roll out for the holidays for fear of embarrassment! I will save your recipe, though, and try it!
ReplyDeleteHi Debbie Lynne,
DeleteNo need to fear that pie pastry panic, any longer! Make it! You'll be laughing!

Poppy
Hi Poppy, this looks so good and I bet is delicious. This would be great with a salad on the side. My family would LOVE this and I will try it. Thanks for sharing! Enjoy the rest of the week.
ReplyDeleteJule
Hi Julie,
DeleteYes, definitely do a salad on the side! I like wild greens, endive, spinach, pomegranate seeds and sliced apple, with an olive oil/balsamic base, infused with a squirt of Dijon mustard and fresh orange juice and a tablespoon of honey! Try it; it's divine!
xo
Poppy
It looks scrumptious!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeletePoppy
Poppy, this looks delicious. I am a huge onion fan and if you add bacon, I consider this a winner! Bookmarking to try later!

Mmm, that quiche looks delicious! That's something I could eat for any meal, and would be perfect for lunch or dinner with a salad. I'm going to pin this so I can remember to make it soon!
ReplyDeleteHi Melanie,
DeletePlease do so, Melanie. It is savoury and scrumptious!

Poppy
I put this in the breakfast idea book and it will join the other recipes in our Bed and Breakfast. Bacon is a sure winner in this house if it is wrapped around, baked in, fried up or mixed in it is enjoyed by many.
ReplyDeleteNow, the pastry on the other hand I've given up on. However, I'm about to give it another go after reading the ingredients. The fat content is perfect and just riche enough for my taste. Thanks for the yummy recipe and colourful post
Hi Cindy,
DeleteYes! This tart goes a long way and if you made a couple for the day's menu, I'm sure they would be appreciated by your guests! The pastry is simple and fast and tasty! Please give it a go; I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!
Poppy
Yum! This looks delicious and I am saving the recipe. Thanks for sharing, Poppy.

I would have never thought of putting an egg in a crust recipe, very interesting! I will give it a go but will probably replace the bacon for some fresh garden spinach... Thanks for sharing this on the Art of Home-Making Mondays :)
