On My Break from Boxing

Yesterday morning, after three gruelling rounds,
I managed to single-handedly defeat
my two daring opponents, dust and dirt,
in yet another weekly boxing victory.
I rewarded myself with a cup of strong,
Greek coffee, the healthy heavyweight of brews!

Reaching for my daily dose of caffeine,
I noticed that a sketchy scene was stamped on
my cup, from the froth that forms upon steaming.

What, pray tell, does this look like to you?

Maybe something like the above?
Now, I may be bouncing off the walls, just
a teeny bit, (yes, from that java hit) -
even so, battling dust and dirt,
can drive the best of domestic athletes
briefly bonkers, but, I am not too dizzy
to recognize a tree when I see one,
whether it's perched on a mountain top,
or carved out on crockery!
A tree is a tree, don't you agree?

Some of you may be wondering,
'Why all the fuss?'.
Well, you see, here in Greece,
the foamy debris, from your morning coffee
reads like a mini marquee of your future!

 Thus,
My single, lush, leafy tree
symbolizes a content family,
(extended, included).
And for that,
I sincerely am grateful.

Thanks for visiting!

  2. Ah, boxing certainly caught my eye! There is something most of us are pretty adept at, I just never thought about it in that perspective! Who knew?!
I only knew of tea leaves reading, I am learning again! I'll check my cuppa next time!
P.S. Is that third photo of the view from home? Splendid!

  3. First of all I like your very Canadian looking mug. lol And I did notice the stain in it and thought it looked like a cedar tree before you even discussed it. Pretty neat I think.

    1. Hi Tammy,

In truth, my home doesn't get that dusty or dirty, as it's only my husband and myself, so traffic is minimal. BUT, it's the ceramic tiles that border the house, that are especially muddy at this time of year, with the rainy weather and frequent south winds, that deliver red sand from North Africa straight to my door!

  5. Little did I know that a coffee cup could hold a good omen as well as a tasty blend. I like the way you think, Poppy.

  6. You have such an eye for these things and I, for one, appreciate it a lot. :) I really enjoyed seeing some Greek food items in that first photo; I've got a thing for looking at foreign groceries, I find them fascinating.

  7. Well, I have heard of reading tea leaves, but never coffee smudges! I am glad that your morning brew held a nice fortune! It sounds like a fun way to start the day! I usually drink plain hot water in the morning, it's pretty boring. I never see anything in my cup, except the bottom! ;)

  8. Why not a tree? It seems like a very good omen - and I love that tradition in a coffee cup.

  11. I definitely saw the tree, even before you said it. I guess this is the Greek version of reading tea leaves? Whatever, I am glad that it reveals a content family. I'll be paying more attention to my coffee cup from now on!

  19. It looks more like a bud of a weed to me but it is all in the eyes of he beholder. A clean house makes one feel better. Too bad it does not stay that way.

  20. I love your whimsey and magical way of blogging! So cute. So different. So.... Fun!

Ahhhhh, in Greece, you read the foamy debris, from your morning coffee , kind of like reading tea leaves. Never heard of that!

Mmmmm, I looked. It won't work for me. I don't add milk to my decaf. Because I'd really love, love, love to add Cream. But am Lactose Intolerant. -pout-

Oh well, I'm sure there are many of your readers, who will be able to add this, to their morning routine. :-)

    2. Oh, What is so funny is this is the way I have been doing my coffee for about a month. I boil it. I found an old 1912 recipe book and they explained how to do coffee this way. The only difference is I do not have the finely ground beans. I guess I should try it with the more finely ground kind. I may try it tomorrow with the fine grind. Interesting.

  27. How neat to have meanings of form in your coffee. I cant get ahead of the dirt here from the Santa Ana winds we have been having. Never ending ..... I love a good cup of coffee - love the Starbucks French Roast and have about 3 cups in the morning to get me jump started.
I always enjoy your posts so much Poppy. Have a terrific week.

  33. So many people would not have given that 'tree' a second look or thought, and surely those individuals would never be able to compose such inventive and witty posts. You have a wonderful imagination Poppy! I love your outlook on life.

As for Greek coffee...judging from the color, it looks like it would put hair on one's chest, so I will graciously say no thank, you. I've got enough of that without any help tyvm ;).

  39. YES! I saw it as a tree when I first started studying it! I love things like this. Recently, we had a cross mysteriously appear on our counter...I think it was from some water seeping through a pair of my husband's pliers we had laid on the counter...maybe they were a bit rusty? I wrote a post about it and included pictures called "The Precious Cross", in case you want to see the neat picture that appeared. Then the other day, I opened a bag of potatoes and found that almost the entire bag was made up of heart-shaped potatoes!!! I had never seen anything like it in my life. Again, I wrote a blog about it with pictures called "Meatloaf and Ten Pounds of Love", in case you want to see it. I think the tree in your mug was something special! I so enjoy your blog. :) Hugs from America, Cheryl

  49. A reward from the gods for your brave battle fought & won. I think that little foamy silhouette deserves printing out and framing. Now I'm wondering if you washed the cup?! The view of the actual tree looking into the valley is stunning! Takes my breath away even through a photograph. Is that the view that won your heart over to move to Crete? You are one lucky girl Poppy! Wendy xox
