Faking Fall

Although autumn has officially arrived,

here on the island, we're still swimming,

as temps today reached 29°C/84°F!

Can you feel the heat emanating from this photo
of our ONE and ONLY pumpkin?

Snapping away in the scorching heat
is no picnic in the pumpkin patch!

 Needless to say,
it was difficult to focus

 on my seasonal subjects,

 while they sought some shade,

and respite from flaming rays.

I, too, can't tell you how tempted I was

to jump into this!

But, I needed to dismiss
this thought from my brain,
and from the watery haven,
I had to refrain.

So, I scurried about the deck to and fro,
baking and burning, myself and my shadow!

Faking fall in Crete
 is no easy feat,
And, despite a pumpkin and mums,
One must still be discreet.

For, the lens is savvy, sensitive and smart
and can scan the difference
 between real life and art.

 Thanks for visiting!

  1. I love your pool, love it! I think your pomegranates are a dead giveaway for fall - they are in season right? I love the summer months and the temps but I am really enjoying have a proper fall. This week, the mornings have been cold and crisp and the little guy and I love finding piles of leaves to ride our bikes through. As always, I really enjoy your posts, Poppy!

  4. Oh my goodness, every photo was just gorgeous to me. I love the colors and all the detail.
We're still hot here too. I haven't even moved from sleeveless to short sleeves. I have to pretend it's fall anyway because the calendar says it is.

  5. Υes, I know how it is, we also had very high temperatures and your swimming pool is so inviting! A little summer in the middle of October! Your outdoor area is fabulous and even if the pumpkin reflects the shadows from the sun, autumn feeling is in the air!

  6. I always enjoy your words and your photos. We too have to fake fall with days in the 80s and the glorious ocean drawing me to sit and relax when I should be gardening.

  8. Poppy, your 'fake' fall looks gorgeous! Even in the 85 degree heat. Oh, I would so enjoy that. I am cold all the time yes, even in the summer some days, so it being 80 degrees would be so lovely. And even though I don't swim, I'd be cooling off in your gorgeous pool with water wings on. :) I think you did a beautiful job of creating a fall look in your backyard. Hugs, Pam

  9. You really faked Autumn well in your heat! Growing up in Southern California we yearned for more "Fallish" weather. It's fun to live in the Pacific N/W now and are able to enjoy all the seasons...

  12. I have to say Poppy, that I am a little bit jealous! I do love fall, but I really am a summer girl! My pool has been covered up, the leaves have begun to come down and there's a bit of a chill in the air. Sunny and hot sounds divine! :) Kim

  13. I'm sorry you need to fake it, but you're doing a great job of it! It looks so much like summer there still but I'm sure there will be a change before too long. Your pool is beautiful and I want to jump in too. That one pumpkin may be lonely but it's a nice big one and the color is beautiful. :)

  18. I hope you jumped into that gorgeous pool after taking the photos for us to enjoy, Poppy! Now that you are all ready for fall, just sit back and enjoy. The cool temps will be here soon, I hope. It's been rather mild in DC too. A bit unseasonal with the warm temps and govt closings. But let's focus on your beautiful photos :)

P.S. Recently on a post you quoted from The Book of Summers. It was so lovely that I had to order the book and began it last night, reading much too late! I couldn't stop reading her beautiful prose, and immediately connected the poppies on her dress with you, Poppy!

    1. Hi Mary,

Thanks! My mother-in-law, who was a farmer, grew the sweetest pumpkins in her little vegetable patch. Every year we used to drive to yaya's ('grandma' in Greek), little patch, where my daughter, Liberty, would choose her pumpkins for her Halloween party, which her Canadian born mother, (yours truly), would organize, so as to infuse her daughter's Greek born status with a little North American character, too! My mother-in-law is no longer with us, and thus, the pumpkin in the pics was bought at our local Farmer's market.

    1. Hi Babs,

Thank you! The tubular, orange flowers are called Tecoma capensis, and more commonly referred to as Cape Honeysuckle. They are easily grown, but very delicate. We had two blooms this year, one in late spring and another in early fall.
