Roses on my table,
floating in a puddle of dew,
petals layered next to savouries,
and a bittersweet, Greek brew.
Posing on my dresser,
claiming centre stage,
they're luscious leading ladies
among gentlemen jars of sage.
They sparkle in the sunlight,
eclipsed only by a gingham shade,
basking smugly in the fleeting limelight,
until their striking beauty fades.
Too much sun for a starlet,
can the process of aging start,
wilting her vibrant spirit,
and breaking her tender heart.
wilting her vibrant spirit,
and breaking her tender heart.
Left with traces of her brilliance,
(when youth beamed on her face,
allowing her to upstage those
tattered, and time embraced),
she, now uprooted, muted and diluted,
was replaced by fresh cut hopefuls
in a curvy, half-full vase.
tattered, and time embraced),
she, now uprooted, muted and diluted,
was replaced by fresh cut hopefuls
in a curvy, half-full vase.
Sadly,
when scarlet petals
snap from brittle stems,
when scarlet petals
snap from brittle stems,
then tumble to the ground
like drizzling rain,
like drizzling rain,
tiny, blood red teardrops,
A BIG welcome to my new followers,
and a SWEET hello to my readers!

My word, the roses are just like velvet with a narrative to match.

More beautiful words and pictures that paint the story behind them. You've caught it all, Poppy, the lushness that we know will be gone. The sun that is so good for the Rose will someday fade her beauty. Younger buds become all the rage, and they never realize their beauty will someday blur into only remembrances.
ReplyDeleteThe great secret to be discovered is the Rose who through some miracle of the heart only grows more beautiful in the eye of those who love her and see only the delicate tea rose complexion behind her lines and wrinkles.
You will be such a Rose some far off day, Poppy, the beauty of your spirit shining through and you'll be one of those women of whom people exclaim, "How does she do it?" And you'll just smile.

ReplyDeleteThe rose is so pretty. We had a frost here and everything is gone, but it is that time of the year. That yellow lamp is darling.

ReplyDeleteI love your poem! It's really well-written and evocative. I love red roses, and yours are beautiful. I'm glad you can enjoy them for a little while longer.
ReplyDeleteGood Evening Poppy, Red roses are so very beautiful and I love it when they fade slightly. It is so lovely to see the sunshine streaming through your beautiful gingham curtains, as we have lots of grey cloudy weather at the moment.
ReplyDeleteI have one lonely, yellow rose which has flowered on my rambling rose and it is holding on for dear life, even though it has been battered by the rain.
You always bring a little sunshine into my life when I visit you.
Best Wishes
Daphne

The roses, the sweet lamp, the gingham curtains...they are all so very lovely Poppy. Your words spoke metaphorically not only of flowers and the seasons, but of life itself. Just beautiful.

Amazing post, both in pictures and words. Well done!
ReplyDeletePoppy,
ReplyDeleteJust beautiful, this was extra special to me this week. My sweet mother-in-law passed away last week and we received several beautiful flower arrangements. When we got home a other night the roses were dried up, but still had their beauty just in a different way.
Thank you for you words, they always make me smile.
Hugs,
Wanda Ann @ Memories by the Mile
