Journey into January

January is a month of new beginnings, new goals, and for
some, new words. Meanings are meticulously scrutinized,
before one dedicates themselves to exhibiting, executing
 and emulating their essence.

Pretty serious business, when you consider that
this ONE word is exclusively selected out of
the 1,019,729.6 that make up the English language,

to govern your actions for 365 days!

This single slogan is supposed to guide one towards
that anticipated ambition, pave the way to personal
growth, and ultimately, deliver definite success.

I don't know about you, but I would have a hard
time picking just one word to direct my deeds,

dictate my desires, or command my cravings!

Restricting myself to a one word motto to motivate
my every move, would cause yours truly to go into
an anxiety induced coma! It just doesn't jive with me,
since I have always been overly generous with
my descriptions, (as my lovely, seventh grade English
teacher, Ms. Soberman, once politely pointed out),
'You are too flowery', she said.

It wouldn't be long, before the miracle of caffeine would
come to my rescue, and wake me from monosyllabic meltdown!

Today, with a bit of luck,

 plenty of prayers,

and a bounty of beautiful words to inspire me,
I am 'packed' and ready to set off on
my journey into January, and the new year,
hoping for good health, the love of family and friends,
and a sense of adventure, along the way.

I'm so happy you're here to see me off.

  1. Oh Poppy, your words are wonderful. The pictures are so good and I almost feel like I am there with you. I wish for you is that you have the best year ever - Happy 2014.

  2. Oh Poppy, this made me laugh out loud!! You hit it right on.....even though I have after long and laboriously mulled over "my word'...and finally decided on one. I'll have to wait until I feel energized to share it:)
I LOVE your take on this word business though and I am SURE your seventh grade teacher would too!!!!! Happy travels as you embark!

  3. Haha, I think you have the perfect amount of floweriness. Is that a real pine tree or a cell tower? It's a very interesting-looking tree.

    1. Hi Jennifer,

Yes, it IS a real pine tree! Isn't it stunning? Its Latin name is Araucaria heterophylla, but it is more commonly known as the Norfolk Island Pine. These trees are beautifully decorated for Christmas around the island and they are quite impressive, reaching up to 65 metres/213 feet!

  4. Happy travels into 2014, Poppy.
No, one word will never do for this gal either.
I do happen to like your flowery words, which
is why I keep coming back. Oh, and the fabulous scenery!

  5. Loved this post. I totally agree with you.

  6. Happy journey! I'm like you - I can't pick out one word to carry me through a whole year. My thoughts and actions change too quickly! LOL

  7. Beautiful January post poppy! ... good health, the love of family and friends,
and a sense of adventure, along the way. That's really what it's all about:) Seeing change as adventure and realizing the value of good health, family, and friends.

  8. Here, here! I can't pick one word either, and even if I could I'm certain it would soon get lost in the sauce with all the other words I have scrambling in my head at any given moment.

Here's to a year of LOTS of words, all of which are hopeful, ambitious and kind.

  9. Bon Voyage as you set off into the adventure that is January!

  10. I always enjoy your photos and perspective. I wish much happiness in 2014!

  11. I will enjoy going on the journey with you and reading your "flowery" prose.

  12. You don't know how much I enjoy your "flowery" talent of saying and describing things and thoughts. Your universe is full of charme and you can capture it so beautifully Poppy! Happy January, Happy New Year!

  13. I appreciate your flowery words. This is a frequent conversation at our house. I search for the perfect word since I started blogging. I wish I could find a word to replace jealous or envy. People say that all the time, but they really don't mean jealous, they mean they are happy for me - yet they will say "I'm so jealous". We are discussing some flowery word to express that saying.

    Lovely photos as always.

  14. For some reason which I cannot explain I was able to choose the word "reach" for myself this year. Of course, it is associated with a list of about 25 other it wasn't that difficult for me to narrow down.

  15. Bon Voyage Poppy!! I don't quite understand the one-word directive either. A new year does give you a sense of freshness and a push to do better, but we really are creatures of habit, and most of us fall back into our old ways soon enough. But to choose one word to guide me through the entire year? It would take me a year to come up with a word worthy of the challenge.
    Wendy x

  16. Oh what beauty you live, surrounded with. It is such a Joy, for us who live in cold winters, to see your views of your January. Delightful.

I couldn't imagine having to pick just one word, to guide me through a whole year, either. In fact, I'm not much on picking any guiding words/phrases/commands. Guess I just want to live as happily and as healthy as possible. Really, really, really simple.

"Too flowery" hu? Silly, silly teacher. :-) What a dull world this would be, if everyone in it, stuck-to-just-the-facts-Jack. :-) Flower-on, my Dear!!!!

  17. Looking forward to joining you on this January Journey - hope it is filled with light and love, flowers and fantasy!

  18. Happy New Year Poppy!May your wishes come true in 2014 no matter how many words they are!AriadnefromGreece!

  19. Thank you for sharing your gift with words! Happy to follow your journey. BTW, that tree in the fourth photos is fabulous - looks like an edgy sculpture. Glorious photos, Poppy!

  20. I wish you happy travels with your suitcase full of words and will enjoy peeking into your world to see how the trip goes for you.

  21. I couldn't possibly pick just one word! I see many who choose a word for the year and I'm like...huh uh...I can't limit myself that way. Love your "flowery" words, Poppy, and the photos, too. Happy travels as you journey into this brand new year!!

  22. What a beautiful way to look at the world and face this journey we are all on. You are delightful! Happy new year!

  23. I did chose one word, I thought it was fun to eliminate words that weren't good, to find the one that was best for this year. Thus said, I love words as well and will not limitate my year to that word, just refer to it every now and then. I'm enjoying your pictures as much as your words.

  24. bon voyage!
you made me laugh. an english teacher i once had said "you are in love with words." she meant it of course in a totally accusatory way. LOL. i think I took it as a compliment at the time.
you have the most interesting flora in greece!
i don't know if it's pine. but it looks like it sort of.
only your pine tree looks like little boys' fresh haircuts standing up on every branch!
    made me smile. xo ♥

  25. aha! i scrolled BACK UP through all the comments. should have done that first! i find it is a beautiful Norfolk island pine that grows up to 213 feet! WOW. lovely. and treasured for sure.

  26. Hi Poppy,
I'm with you! I couldn't choose just one word either. I like words and Literature and English were my favourite subjects in school. Words are magical and they have the power to lift you up or send you into the depths of despair. Wonderful post, and that tree is so very interesting. Thanks for sharing your thoughts at my HOME.

  27. Happy New Year Poppy!!
    Love your perspective on life.
I hope you have an amazing New Year..

  28. Bon voyage into 2014, Poppy! One word is almost impossible. I did think of one that would cover a lot of possibilities.
Lovely photos. All that sunshine has me craving a voyage to somewhere bright and warm.

  29. I'm like you, Poppy - I could never choose a "word for the year". I don't even know how that phenomenon started! I see it all over blogs and I just think, "to each their own". It wouldn't do anything for me. And for what it's worth - no offense to your teacher, lol - I love your flowery language!

  30. I do usually choose one word to focus on for the year. This year, I'm having a little trouble narrowing it down to one. Maybe, I should bust loose and choose two! Here's to the new year and all the adventure that awaits us.

  31. I was never aware of the word for the year until I entered Blog Land ..but I don't think I could choose one either :)

  32. Happy New Year! We've been back since late Sunday night and I'm trying to get into the swing of things again. Lovely words and pictures Poppy. xx

Louisa - My Family & Abruzzo

  33. Happy adventures into this new year. I love your floweriness! The post is wonderful as are your pictures. I feel as if I'm taking a mini vacation everytime I visit. Have a great weekend!

  34. There is nothing wrong in being flowery! If I had to pick one word, it would be "love". That encompasses so many things and blessings. May you have have great blessings in this new year.

  35. Hi Poppy, happy new year my dear friend. Sorry for I missed so many of your beautiful posts. I tried to visit one time and left a comment but wasn't sure if it worked. I love the snowmen post. And yes I will be following you throughout your journey this new year. I for one love, love your flowery word. I think it's essential in creative writing. Your first picture looks like one of Monet's.

    Have a good weekend.

  36. Poppy,
I have my bag packed to begin this journey of 2014 with you, I just know you will be taking all of us on wondrous and delightful adventures and encouraging us all to see the beauty, delight and meaning in our world!

  37. Maybe maybe that is why I like you so much, Poppy. I am "flowery", too, and I see so many possibilities out there. A one word mantra is hard. I would at the least have to pick two... To improve. And that would incorporate a host of other possible words.

    Loved this...

  38. I always think about it, but never choose one, I'm not very good at sticking to anything. You're right though, how could one word govern a whole year.
Here's to 2014 and Poppy's view filled with flowery words and photos x

  39. Hi Poppy, I agree with you too about trying to choose a word for 2014 that isn't how I roll! I loved this post and the photos are so beautiful. Wishing you a happy and healthy new year! Have a nice weekend. Julie

  40. I'm so behind in my blog reading, Poppy. I probably missed your send-off into January! I haven't picked one word either...And as for Mrs. Soberman, well she should know that what I LOVE about your writing is that it is flowery...or what I'd call it poetically descriptive!

  41. ΄Οπως πάντα όμορφες φωτογραφίες και υπέροχα
τοπία !!!!! Είσαι τυχερή που ζεις εκεί .
    Φιλιά πολλά

  42. Poppy, you certainly have a way with words. I agree with you it hard to find just one word to describe your year ahead. I enjoyed all your beautiful photos and post. I wish you a HAPPY year ahead!

  43. Beautiful writing and wonderful photos, together make a post well worth visiting! Thank you!

  44. enjoyed reading this...beautiful imagery; it even looks warm

    Happy 2014 to you!

  45. I hope your journey is full. Embrace it. Have a wonderful week:) Jen

  46. It would be hard to gravitate around one word and I have never chosen a word or phrase as I've found done in blogland.
Have a fun and interesting journey this year Poppy.

  47. My dear Poppy, you should write a book or two. You have a way with words that many of us envy. :)
    xoxo bj

  48. It looks like it would be very hard to be unhappy in such a beautiful place. Valerie

  49. Wonderful mosaics Poppy!
Words, words, words! I would get bored with just ONE word - maybe a word a month could work!
I always love your words - you write from your heart - it's lovely!

  50. beautiful images and words. I have chosen the word reach because it resonates with where I am in my life right now....however, I looked into the thesaurus which associated reach with 25 other words!

  51. stunning photography - I don't think I could pick one word - but I have a mantra to live by - "be true to yourself and the world will come to you".
Have a wonderful week. I am joining you through Mosaic Monday.

  52. Well, all I can say t begin with is I am glad for your flowery words.;) I think that is actually a marvelous compliment. Hmm, not sure what word that I would choose to being me into this present 2014...maybe grace, or possibly my all time favorite word cherish...cherish every moment, savor them, even the not so good ones, and glean from them something to have growth from. Happy New Year precious one~

  53. Good and happy travels on your journey my friend!

    Big Texas Hugs,
    Susan and Bentley

  54. It would be hard to restrict oneself to one word - you always do such a wonderful job conveying the moment! Beautiful post! I do appreciate you sharing with Home and Garden Thursday,

  55. Hello Poppy - I think 2014 will be a great adventure and choosing one word would be too difficult! Lovely post - I do appreciate you sharing with A Return to Loveliness,

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. I really appreciate hearing from all of you! Have a great day!
