August Harvest

Well, it's been almost a month and a half since I last posted, and, in that time, there's been a host of hearty harvests that have graced
our table, like the platter of sweet, precious figs, above,

from our one and only fig tree, planted by my husband's father,
who was a farmer, over sixty years ago, on the outskirts
of the village in which he was born and grew up.

The 'fruits of his labour',
 we are still enjoying, today.

It was very hot, the day we picked the figs, and looking
up towards the sun to pluck each one from its stem, was
stressful on the eyes, but worth the effort, in the end.

What proved to be more of a challenge, for me, was the rough
and rocky road back to the car, as I struggled to keep my balance, fearing a flip with every little slip, unlike my husband, whose footsteps seemed to fit perfectly between each pebbly crack and cranny!

Earlier, we had stopped by the three loaded
walnut trees, to give them a good watering, in
preparation for their collection, next month.

It's the obvious difference in the shape of their leaves
that assists in the distinction of each, since from afar,
these two golden green globes look almost identical!

Facing north, towards the sea, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, zucchini and cucumbers

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, our veggie
garden is finally in full swing, after a late start.

Facing south, a variety of tomatoes

Due to our neighbour's towering Leyland Cypresses,
an entire side of our garden, unfortunately, does not
get enough sunlight for veggies or flowers to thrive,
so we planted in the field across the cement wall,

In the background, just before all the dry weeds begin, green onions, most of which
will be yanked to dry in the sun, then roughly braided and used as cooking onions.

where our little chapel of St. Irene can be found,
overlooking all the pretty produce in progress.

Clockwise, from top left: lemons, plums, pomegranates and tomatoes

Our fruit trees are also flourishing! And, since
tomatoes are technically considered fruit, I
included them in the collage above.

Our lemon tree did not disappoint; a second series of blossoms
a little while ago, freshly scented the breeze and now the fruit
provides tangy, citrus accents in roasts, cakes and cookies.

I hope you've enjoyed reading about our August harvest, this year. We are blessed to have such healthy, organic fare at our fingertips, although, I admit, my  husband deserves all the credit for digging, planting, watering, weeding and worrying about it! I merely whip up a dish with whatever bundle of beautiful, earthy goodness he gathers.

Simple, seasonal, local food (and you can't get any more
local than your own garden), is, by far, the most exquisite.

What's growing in your garden?
 Thanks for visiting!

Shelf Life

Hello, everyone, Happy April!

Can you guess what I've been doing?

Yup, taking more pics of wildflowers, but
this time, I thought I'd bring some home

to create a cheery, spring vignette.

I needed to sweeten the kitchen,

with something other than the aroma of baked goodies
- my cozy, wintry pastime that packed on a few pounds!

Voilà! A fresh buffet of eye candy,
pretty and completely calorie free!

I simply cannot get enough of these daisies. They're my
 custom concoction of Vitamin C, (that's 'c' for Cuties),
but these lovelies are also a by-product of Vitamin D -
sunny skies, that in turn, encourage aerobic exercise.

The effect on my physique is not yet evident; for that, I'll
have to wait, unlike the instant results on my kitchen shelf,

where rows and rows of springtime petals managed to
lighten my spirit and plant a warm smile on my face.

 Now that winter's technically over,
what melts your heart about spring?

Thanks for visiting!
Have a wonderful week!

xoxo

To Market, To Market

To market, to market
To buy farm fresh goods,

 Home again, home again,
To play with the food!

This summer, our garden granted us with plenty of
veggies, in many different varieties. From zesty
tomatoes, cool cukes, and an abundance of zucchini,

to sweet cooking onions, the last of which were
harvested a few days ago, braided, and left outside to dry.

A few weeks leading up to their harvest, their leaves
were picked upon demand, to be featured in salads,
tarts, fricassée, (a lovely, lemony, Greek version),

and of course, bouquets for this blogger's styling fix!

Plans for the winter shift are already in progress,

and include spinach, romaine lettuce, collard greens,
and leeks, all rich in antioxidants and a host of vitamins!

But, until then, our local farmers continue
to provide us with fresh, seasonal fare.

Versatile, these summer starlets take direction well.
So, until you decide their fate of whether to bake, puree,
boil or sauté, why not have some fun first, and simply play?!

Promise to visit you all soon;
it's been a busy weekend!
Thanks for visiting and
have a wonderful week!

Raindrop Roses

Roses on my table,
floating in a puddle of dew,
petals layered next to savouries,
and a bittersweet, Greek brew.

 Posing on my dresser,
 claiming centre stage,
  they're luscious leading ladies
among gentlemen jars of sage.

They sparkle in the sunlight,
eclipsed only by a gingham shade,
basking smugly in the fleeting limelight,
until their striking beauty fades.

Too much sun for a starlet,
can the process of aging start,
 wilting her vibrant spirit,
and breaking her tender heart.

Left with traces of her brilliance,
(when youth beamed on her face,
 allowing her to upstage those
 tattered, and time embraced),
she, now uprooted, muted and diluted,
was replaced by fresh cut hopefuls
in a curvy, half-full vase.

 Sadly,
when scarlet petals
snap from brittle stems,
then tumble to the ground
 like drizzling rain,
  tiny, blood red teardrops,
stain their souls
with endless pain.

 Thanks for visiting!

A Sweetheart from West Sussex

On Sunday, my sweet friend, Maria, and her lovely family,
came to visit all the way from West Sussex, England.

At our first meeting, my dear friend surprised me with a stay
at a five star luxury hotel, for some serious girlfriend tête-à-tête time,

which included cocktails by the pool, a soothing spa treatment,
al fresco dining, live jazz, and loads of laughs.

Days later, I joined Maria and family for an excursion
to Archaneswhile Sunday was spent here, in the village,
for our annual BBQ lunch, now a family tradition.

Among the usual fired up fare and summery sides, the meal
always includes my coconut cream pie -her only request!

My only request was that she not bring a thing.
Is that too much to ask for,
especially after spoiling me with that gorgeous getaway?!

But no... she had to cater to her friend's sweet tooth,
and showed up with an assortment of petite pastries, too pretty to eat,

along with some other precious parcels,
to be presented in an upcoming post!

What can I say? She's a kind and generous gal.
I love her dearly; she is my soul sister and I will miss her terribly!

In a snap (!)  - her short, but sweet visit came to a close.
Back in Britain, she is revitalized and ready for her English routine.

And so, in between cooking, cleaning and car pooling,
she can be found ringing up yours truly,
ready to rampantly reminisce for hours!

Thanks for visiting!

And, to Brenda, at Cozy Little House,
thanks for the shout out, 'Coach'!
