Summarizing Summer

'Paris' Peach', Paris Wyatt Llanso

Bowls of juicy sweetness
arranged to be devoured,
easily steal the show from
  bouquets of fragrant flowers.

'Lighthouse Waiting', Barbara Applegate

Red and white houses of light,
 symbols of safety for passing
ships in the night, during the day,
keep an eye on the wild and wavy.

by Mila Marquis

Reading, dreaming, sleeping outdoors,
under the luxury of a thick, leafy tree,
bookworm buddies keeping you great company,
before parting ways, to lose yourself in yet
  another captivating, fascinating story.

'Green Flip Flops', Jen Norton

 So,
slide into your favourite flip flops,
spray your painted toes with the hose,
shake the sand from your beach towel,
then cool down with iced joes, for
fall, too, is on foot, drawing nearer and
nearer, to these still hot, hazy days.
Won't you miss being lazy and crazy
when summer softly tip toes away?

Thanks for visiting,
and happy weekend!

Pink & Purple Pretties

Pink Oleander and Purple Morning Glory

 Pink and purple pretties
 befriend an abandoned, lonely house,

dabbing the clifftops, up above,
with balls of brush stroke sprouts.

Mingling with leafy greens,
from sweet figs to fruity vines,

they're rudely poked and prodded
  by giant, woodsy twines!

Ah, so peaceful
 are the periwinkle, prickly ones
under the canopy of olive trees,

Still,
the pink and purple pretties stay put,
to keep their sad friend company.

Thanks for visiting and
have a wonderful week!

A SUMMER SERENADE

(click on link above to hear our rendition)

Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber
Lyrics: Charles Hart

Vocals: Nicholas Tsachakis, Poppy
Piano: Anna Lisowski

 Think of me,
Think of me fondly,
When we've said goodbye.

Remember me,
Once in a while,
Please promise me you'll try.

On that day,
That not so distant day,
When you are far away and free,

If you ever find a moment,
Spare a thought for me.

Think of August when the trees were green.
Don't think about the way things might have been.

 Think of me,
Think of me waking,
Silent and resigned.

Imagine me,
Trying too hard
To put you from my mind.

Recall those days,
Look back on all those times,
Think of the things we'll never do.

There will never be a day
When I won't think of you.

Long ago, it seems so long ago,
How young and innocent we were.

You may not remember me,
But I remember you.

Flowers fade,
The fruits of summer fade,

They have their season,
So do we.

But, please promise me,
That sometimes, you will think
Of me.

 Thanks for visiting!

Sailing into Summer

Today, was my very first
swim of the season.
Cowardly creeping
into a cool, blue oasis;
slowly 'sailing' into summer

My husband and I drove fifteen minutes north,
to a tiny cove called Little Marina.

It's quieter, and less crowded
than the vast, infinite shores

that the younger generation
seems to favour.

Cuddled by fragrant pines
and skinny cypress trees,

I particularly like the cove
for its rough and rocky boulders,

that crookedly line
both the coast

and the countryside,
in the sky above.

Braving a prickly carpet
of pebbles
is the only pathway

to a complete catharsis
of invigorating rejuvenation.

Thanks for visiting!

FROM PATIO TO PORCH

My previous cake: double layered and documented!
Yesterday, after decorating my triple layered, strawberry gateau and styling it on a pretty, lace engraved cake stand, I carefully carried it out to the patio, excited to take a few photos to share with you.  Just as the late, afternoon sun softly lit the scene, my Sony Cyber Shot 3.2 Mega Pixel DSC-P72 digital camera suddenly conked out on me!
Our patio, a few days ago
Actually, it hadn't  been cooperating in the last few weeks, but I was in denial. I tried to revive it by inserting new alkaline batteries, but nothing. Funnily, it turns on, but a few seconds later, shuts down. So, until I make the trek into town for two new rechargeables, (hoping they will resuscitate it), I won't be featuring images from my home, but from cyberspace, where there are millions, and many of them, magnificent!
This mostly red, white and green porch is so darn cute, isn't it? The combination of a cedar shingled and brick exterior, potted red geraniums bordering the stairs and tiny, but quaint, seating area, all speak of simpler times. Surrounded by a lush, low levelled garden, this porch is fresh and fun, bursting with old-fashioned charm.
Equally sweet, this simply styled, cottage-y porch also in red, white and green, evokes pure relaxation as it seems to be a quiet place, where one can playfully swing into a siesta slumber, and awaken to a cup of coffee and sugary treats. Again, is the presence of cheery geraniums coincidental or do these undemanding flowers create a calm and soothing space for deep sleep?
Softly merging blue into the colour scheme adds an airiness, a whisper of seaside serenity. The mosaic of roughly cut stone brings to mind piles of pebbles on the shore, and how they feel under bare feet: a massage of mini mountains, slightly painful, before the spa splash into the sea!
In the late afternoon, a bike ride with friends and a visit to the ice cream parlour awaits! What could be more indulgent? When I first came across this cedar shingled porch with the periwinkle blue door and flower box, overflowing with a bundle of blooms, I felt a rush of happiness. Romantic, rustic, red and refreshing, this porch, for me, is truly enchanting! I wish I could just walk straight into my computer screen and into this storybook splendour!
But, alas, here on the island, a great many porches are perched high above the Sea of Crete, where boldly coloured beauties brighten the sky and sea, like beads of passion waking a waveless, swell of blue. Their heavy terracotta pots grounding them, they stand straight and strong, resilient against any whipping winds that may threaten their collective stature.

Hope you enjoyed this little peek
at some of my favourite porches.

Thanks so much for coming along!

Poppy

A NEW FRIEND AND NEIGHBOUR

Crete Family Villas
This summer I had the pleasure of meeting Jocelyne Sireilles Kerrigan. Jocelyne lives in Washington, D.C. She is the proud co-owner/operator of Crete Family Villas, three beautiful luxury villas located in our picturesque little village.

On a breezy summer’s eve, our neighbour, a stately judge, was having coffee with my husband and myself on our patio, when, in between small sips, he suggested that I meet the American woman who owned the Crete Family Villas in the village. He felt that, besides the North American connection, we had a lot in common. For instance, he noticed that she was very friendly and energetic, adding that she had taken a special interest in organizing cultural events for the village folk. Wow! That’s exactly what our little hamlet needed. Yes, we live in a most charming of authentic Cretan villages, but we lack creative and cultural outlets. Needless to say, I was intrigued.
"What does she look like?" I inquired, wondering if I had seen her around the village.

"Well, she’s a petite woman with dark hair," the judge answered.

Half the women in Greece fit this description! In any event, a few days later, my husband and I were taking a drive to the grocery store. We had just turned the corner, when I spotted a slim figure in the distance. For some reason, I was certain it was Jocelyne! Perhaps it was her confident walk and bluntly cut black hair. Her skin was bronzed from days spent gardening and swimming, and simply being out and about. I called out to her as if we were long lost friends. Slightly startled, she slowly approached the car, while we slowed down. As I proceeded to explain who I was, the confused look on her gentle face began to fade into an enthusiastic warmth and acceptance.  We agreed that a visit was needed to exchange stories, but no definite date was set.
Jocelyne
About a month or so later, my mom and sister were visiting from Toronto. We were inside the house, unpacking from an excursion, when I heard a woman’s voice greeting us good evening at the front gate.  Immediately, I recognized it as Jocelyne’s – friendly and American, with a touch of French flair. While my husband began showing her around the property, the women in the clan scrambled to make the house look presentable, in case Jocelyne wanted a tour! Finally, we all took our seats under a starlit sky, where we chatted and chuckled for hours, and became fast friends.

Stay tuned for Part 2:
Crete Family Villas and an Interview with Jocelyne!

Thanks for visiting.
