Nostalgic, Romantic Me

Remember the century days when gazing into your
sweetheart's eyes was so much more exciting than
staring at your smartphone for the millionth time?

Can you recall a time when chats took place in person,
when faces showed feelings and bodies talked,
before the smiley, emticon revolution?

Don't you miss the thrill of getting ready for that first real date,
floating high in the sky, giddy with butterflies,
in the arms of your true soul mate

Mind you, meeting on Skype and FaceTime
come pretty close, but real hugs in real-time,
 they have yet to host!

Unlike a star studded night, jasmine thick in the air,
hands sweaty, head dizzy, knees weak - (who will dare
to make that first move?) - and prove, with a kiss,
that now, they've only got eyes for each other, and
with hearts aflutter, all doubts they dismiss.

And because I believe that music is the most
expressive language of all, I hope you enjoy the fun
and flirty duet below, and indulge my current mood
for those sweet and innocent times long ago!

  2. Charming, Poppy! Hearing your musical voice and seeing these delightful old illustrations tell the story so well of what young lovers once had. All of those steps, that may get skipped now, were thrilling. Your post takes me back to those dates long ago and how sweet they were.

I'm thinking about old Doris Day movies now, and Andy Hardy movies--all of which were way before your time, Poppy!

I'm sure young lovers today think this time is just as wonderful.

I vote for this for my favorite Valentine post of 2015!

    1. Thank you, my sweet friend!

I know it's before my time, but those eras have stolen my heart; probably due to that jazzy vibe so prevalent in the pop culture of the day! Yes, I'm positive that young lovers today think that current communicative trends in romance, are IT, and who can blame them?

      Thanks for your Valentine vote!:))

      Wishing you a lovely weekend!

  4. I love these old photos. What memories they bring back. My hubby and I still sit in our lanai and talk a lot but don't get all dressed up to 'go out' much any more. That sounds like fun. Enjoy your weekend sweet friend! Hugs, Diane

  5. Oh yes the good old days indeed! Days when you could actually hear a your sweet hearts voice over the telephone!! Wow what a concept in this texting day and age...
What is that saying about progress again and what is lost?
Technology sure is convenient but I don't think it has made us more romantic ....or organized...

    1. Thank you, Lucy!

I guess the advantage today is getting to see your sweetheart's face AND hear his voice in FaceTime or Skype, which is a definite plus!

Enjoy your weekend, my fellow Canuck!

  6. I'm glad my husband and I met pre-cell phones & texting. It would have been nice to meet post public smoking ban however. I recall a lot of clothes smelling like stale cigarette smoke after our dates! But it's not all bad news for sweethearts these days. My daughter and her boyfriend are able to converse regularly even though they're separated while they attend different universities (Peterborough & St. Catharines). I don't know if that relationship would have survived if they didn't have their cell phones, but it's been going for four years now. Loved the song ... you have a cute voice ;) Wendy

    1. Thanks, Wendy!

I totally agree with you re: the smoking, but you are blessed that, at least in our native Canada, citizens actually ABIDE by the law and refrain from lighting up! Here, in Greece, sadly, such rules are not followed and for this Canadian expat, it is shocking, and completely unacceptable.

      Have a wonderful weekend!

  7. Yes, let's put our phones down and actually talk to each other - not just "lovers"! Oh, how much I enjoyed your duet...what lovely voices and a catchy tune. You are a woman of many talents! Did you record this in a professional studio or perhaps were you in a theater production?

    1. Thank you, Melanie!

Nicholas was a drama student of mine when I was teaching the subject at an English community centre, in the city. With Anna, we formed a trio, and recorded a few tunes in a studio, as demos for potential, professional engagements.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend, my friend!

  8. I agree wholeheartedly! I will admit that email played a role in our relationship because we had choice but to be apart for a couple of years after we met and began dating, but it could never replace the face-to-face time we were fortunate to be able to spend together during that period. But then again, he's still my favorite person in the whole world and I love to be with him. I can't imagine my phone ever being more interesting than he is!

  9. Your images are, as always, simply perfect! They do bring back a time that seems so very different than today, and in many ways it was different. But feelings, love, the proverbial butterflies that come when falling in love...that will never change. It's the one thing we can count on. Perhaos the way we express it has changed. Yes, it has I'm sure. Letter writing (it's how my parents fell in love) is a thing of the last. Long phone conversations are rare, but now we have the ability to keep in touch with others half a planet away, so I suppose that's a good thing.

A very nostalgic post Poppy. Thank you for the memories :).

  11. This is so sweet, Poppy. It reminds my of the '50's and bobby socks and jute boxes. Things were very simple then. Has true love changed? I think not, just different ways of expressing it.

I love these images, I can see this was a thoughtful post!! :)

  13. Wonderful images, Poppy, that bring back nostalgic memories of long ago. Yes, I think something is lost with all of our technology and connection, but I have to say that once email and Skype came along I've enjoyed them so much for visiting with family far away.

  17. I enjoyed your song Poppy, It's funny how the male wants to move onto things other than conversation (AKA small talk) in your song. I think that when I was dating that I judged the suitability of a potential mate on if he could carry on a meaningful conversation for several hours without any awkward moments. Giggling breaks were permitted of course. Lots of giggling breaks!

  20. Hello Poppy,

The perfect post for a week when thoughts of Valentines are in the air.

And, how well you express this feeling of dehumanisation which seems to be creeping in as the impersonal Internet takes the place of human contact. Yes, how good it would be to see people having real conversations in restaurants rather than looking at their mobile telephones. So sad.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yes, all those things are sadly in the past... I was talking about this very subject to my husband the other night. I told him imagine what it will be like in another 20 years? virtual marriages perhaps?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Oh for 'the good ol' days'! Nothing like a touch of nostalgia to bring a smile to one's face. You've used the right bit of whimsy and given us a trip back in our memory banks to a wonderful time and place in our lives. It drives me crazy to see not only couples in restaurants and other public areas not speaking but looking into their cell phones, but also the number of parents who hand their child a phone to keep them busy or entertained or quiet when out in public. Have a great weekend!

  23. So sweet and nostalgic! Nothing beats the 'real' thing - cheek to cheek etc! Fun post that I can read at the moment as hubby is still at work and I'm not ignoring him behind my laptop!!

    1. Oh, thank you so much, Ginene; you're very sweet!

My professional experience consists of lead vocals, as one third of a trio I belonged to, with engagements in hotel and resorts, here, on the island, during the summer tourist season. I also sang in an international choir for ten years, when we lived in the city, where I also taught theatre classes for an English community centre. During that time, I produced and directed amateur productions of musicals for the centre, and for other associations. Academically,I had auditioned for the Drama Program at the University of Toronto, hoping to become an actress/singer for the stage/film, but decided to switch majors after my first year, and graduated with a B.A. in English, instead.

Thanks so much for your interest!

  27. Beautiful song, Poppy! I love when you share your voice! I agree, romance is, um, different now. The kids text and chat virtually, but then don't understand why they don't really feel anything or connect in person when they meet. I keep trying to tell them that true romance and deep feelings involve a kind of physical chemistry that just can't be shared via text. They are slowly getting it! It's a lost art, truly.

  35. Back to the Future 1 and 2 have been playing on cable and in the second one, Marty McFly travels to the year 2015 and their 2015 is nothing like it actually turned out to be. No one in the eighties could have predicted that we'd all be stuck on our smart phones and taking selfies and so on. I wish relationships could be a bit more traditional but how cool is it that you can meet people from all over the world now? As always, your voice is wonderful! Thank you for sharing.
