Mood Lighting

Sometimes,
our little hamlet in the hills
 seems quite susceptible to
 the moods of Mother Nature,
as terracotta topped houses
 huddle together, while
a ghostly fog floats by.

 On an unusually
gloomy day,
strokes of sunshine
beam on the greenery
bordering the church -
 the leafy street lights
of pastoral scenes.

Minutes before their shift,
black capped bulbs on
 lanky lampposts stand by,
as the late, afternoon light
lingers, quietly leaving
just before dusk.

 Inside,
 the soft glow
of candlelight
sweetly greets
the night,
and the day fades
into darkness.

 Thanks for visiting and
have a lovely weekend.

Bright Bites of Light

Lately, I've been drawn,
more than usual,
to the luster of light.

This lure rarely occurs
in the afternoon,

(having retired to my room),
where, shutters closed,

no light may loom
to sabotage siesta!

But when I awake,
caffeine and cookies
await, in sunlit state,

to energize and aid
a drowsy dreamer.

There is always fruit,
seasonal, and sweet.
Edible, flickering bulbs,

served cool in the summer,
a refreshing splash of a treat.

Lavished by light,
my mood lifts and takes flight,

for a smoother landing
when darkness sets in,

and brightness succumbs
to shades somber.

Thanks for visiting!

HOME IS WHERE THE SUN IS

(This post was written last January, in Toronto)

I love Canada. I was born in Toronto, (where I am presently visiting), one of the greatest cities in the world, in my humble opinion. I have sweet memories of my life here, as a little girl, and of course, as a young woman.

A loving and funny family of fifty plus, (I'm Greek - there's no such thing as extended family!), devoted friends, (some from as far back as highschool), beautiful neighbourhoods  and an effective infrastructure are the things I miss most when I'm not here, which is most of the time, as I live far away; both a sea and an ocean separate me from the first twenty-two years of my life.

As many of you know, I have lived on the island of Crete for the last twenty-five years, shortly after I met my husband, who was born there. I fell in love with the obvious attractions at first: the sandy beaches and crystal clear waters, the five thousand years of history, the friendly people and of course the food, which is simple, fresh and flavourful.

But, aside from all of these wonderful aspects of this ancient land, it was the adventure of discovering its earthy and mysterious treasures that attracted me to it.

So much so, that I left my close knit clan and Canadian comforts and began a new life, and in essence, a new identity, in a country whose blood ran in my veins, but was a stranger to my heart.

Much like the photo above, where tropical trees and snow cone peaks share the same surreal stage, Crete is a continuous source of contradictions. Venetian architecture, Turkish delicacies and French fashion, among other influences, have infused the Cretan carriage, creating subtle contours in its traditionally rooted character.

But, amid all the flurry of foreign fluctuation, economic erosion and crippling austerity, one thing is always certain: the Cretan sun shows up on my doorstep day after day, to brighten my mood with the brush of its rays.

And so, I await its arrival, promising peace and colour and life!

High in the hills, the flowers stir in the breeze and the waves rock to and fro below. Soothing, enriching and pure, it warms my face, my heart and soul.

I miss the sunny skies at home! Until we meet again...
Hope you are blessed with the beauty and tranquility
of natural sunlight wherever you are!

Thanks for visiting.

My Sunbathed Bathroom

Welcome to my washroom. Or rather, bathroom.
Excuse me - restroom. Or is it water closet?

Supposedly, a washroom or restroom is found in public places,
while a bathroom refers to the residential kind...Generally speaking.

Then again, it all depends on where you grew up,
until you relocate to another country, and that's
when things can get a little confusing. Or very amusing. Or not.

When we were designing our home,
bathrooms were gaining ground,
slowly stealing the spotlight from another starlet
of watery scenes - the kitchen!

It seemed that people wanted a more specialized room, where they could escape from the hustle and bustle of their day to relax and unwind in a space that provided a little luxury,

some peace and quiet and a whole lot of atmosphere.  For some, this translates into 'spa', while for others it simply means 'spartan'.
It's a very personal feeling and attitude.

Actually, I'm somewhere in the middle.
I wanted a space that was calming,
thus, the earthy tones in tiles
and granite and soft white furnishings.

But I also wanted to feel revitalized and that's where
the pastels and bright wildflowers come in,
playfully accessorizing the neutral foundation.
Two different philosophies, one understanding.

My washroom is separated into two rooms:
the 'powder room', which contains a double vanity,
display cabinet, and washing machine, and the
'bathroom', where the bathtub and toilet can be found.

Each space has its own window and this allows sunlight to pour in practically all day, creating a soothing little sanctuary
for the stressed and the weary, a place where rest
has the power to rejuvenate and refresh!

In the end, isn't that what this room is all about?
And so, perhaps it is most fitting to say that a washroom
boasts a bathroom, in which there is room to rest.
There! No more wishy-washy wording and everybody wins!

Thanks for visiting!

Morning Light

There's something about the soft morning light
that makes everything prettier, more serene.

Fresh autumn flowers from the garden seem
more cheery, promising a day full of fun.

An unset table, the stillness of the early hour
and quiet moments, soon to shift scenes,

as the light wakes the day, wandering through
the silent space, gently notifying a new start,

a clear vision, a deep aspiration, a strong need to
fill the day with soul and spirit and truth.
