A Town Mouse in a Country House

Whether
near the square,
set in stone,
 and bejewelled in
 ruby red radiance,

 or stucco clad,
 and accessorized by a
 signature sweet fragrance -
they charm.

Crowning a hilltop,
overlooking the sea,
tiny, kid-drawn cottages
 bewitch and beckon me.

In the valley below,
 vanilla villas and
 patches of produce
  in bright, veggie green,
  are the perfect ingredients
 of Cretan country cuisine.

Back home,
between the finials
 of the black, iron gate,
this born and bred
town mouse gazes at
her geographical fate.

  4. So pretty. I would be a country mouse that likes to visit a city mouse once in awhile.

  5. So beautiful. I live in the city, because it is convenient with my child's schooling. However, when I was in Europe for 5 weeks, it was quite obvious that I would easily be a country mouse, if my daughter could study anywhere.

  10. It's funny, a friend and I were just remarking the other day how we are both country mice and city mice. Of course, we live in the country, but we both need the pulse of the city every once in a while. To me, the perfect lifestyle would be a penthouse in Manhattan with a fabulous city lit view, and a house somewhere in one of your pictures perhaps? Yes, I think that would be heaven on earth.

  11. Oh Poppy, your photos are always a feast for the eyes. I especially love the front door with the flowers and leaves hanging down - I wish I could grow something like that here :)

I must say that I am a country mouse :) Hugs to you, sweet lady!

  24. I'm a town mouse with an appreciation for and need to be in the countryside on a regular basis. Perhaps I should be living on the edge of a town with the countryside view behind the house!

  26. Poppy, your colorful photos always grab me and then your words make me sit down and listen. I do so enjoy your posts! I, my friend, am a country mouse! I I love green grass, lush flowers, the sound of the waves lapping at the shore, the quiet night and dark skies full of stars. The concrete jungle is not for me~ I live close enough to go and return in the same day, but I love coming home to the country!!

  38. I think the Cretan tourism department should hire you to take photos and write about your island. I know that since reading your posts I would love to visit. Gorgeous scenery.

I'm a small town mouse that loves the country - how's that for ambivalence?

  39. I prefer the views of a country mouse but the life of a town mouse. There are a lot of critters out in the country, like snakes and skunks and I can't deal. We have a lot of scenery but so many wild animals. I much prefer my cats compared to all the country has to offer. Yet I prefer the wild animals rather than my neighbors. It seems that it's always a compromise!

  40. What lovely photos. The colors in the 1st one were delightful.
I'm more of a "city" mouse but in my case a smaller city rather then a big one.

  41. A born town mouse...until 4 years ago, when we moved 50 Kms out of Athens...I now definitely consider myself a country mouse!!!! I enjoy the countryside so much, my garden, the closeness of the sea side...I could never go back to town!
I wish you a lovely new week, dear Poppy!

  42. I'm a town mouse, as long as the mouse house is near the sea.
I'm not a mouse who likes to swim in the sea but I appreciate a view that contains a lot of sea blue hues !

  43. I'm a town mouse too, so not a city one! Your photography is also so pretty....but then you landscape is beyond beautiful! I love the quiet, grass, flowers and nature! It sooth's my soul though. Stopping by to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving!

This summer I went high up in the mountains of Lefka Ora, it was a paradise! I could live there...

  54. As always Poppy, wonderful photographs.
I don't really know which I am, town or country mouse?
I do love towns and cities, mostly to visit, to admire the architecture and sit at a pavement cafe and do a bit of people watching.
The relaxing calmness of the country is where I like to live though....I think!
The ideal thing, would be to have both, a town house and a country house!

  55. Oh my gosh, you always have the most gorgeous pictures, Poppy! I do like my privacy, but I have to say the city mouse is more my style. I would love to live within walking distance of markets, restaurants and libraries -- that would be ideal!

  57. Poppy, those scapes are an ultimate feast for the eyes!
I have only lived in the country...there is things about the town that appeal but other things not so much. What never ceases to amaze me is how some people in town don't know their next door neighbour at all...I know that is a telling statement.:)
Thanks for your visit, We went away last weekend to Ohio on a wee holiday...I've also started working at a small cafe in near by Elora, add getting ready for Christmas makes for time away from blogging. I hope to return...Merry Christmas my friend!

  66. How about one of each? Yes, I am greedy when it comes to owning houses. I want an apartment and a villa, in the countryside and uptown, near the beach and on the hills. And every since I started visiting your blog, I want one in Crete too :)
